q Why did you obtain ISO 22000 certification?
   
a In December 2008, Saraya Co., Ltd. obtained ISO 22000 certification for ¡Èhygienic management¡É in the service sector. The aim was to differentiate our company from others in the service sector. This certification is positioned as part of the management strategy of Saraya that aims to provide comprehensive business keeping guaranteeing safety and high quality in everything from services to products.



q What sort of added value did ISO 22000 bring to your company¡Çs business?
   
a The fact that we are able to obtain ISO 22000 certification in the service sector is a tremendous confidence booster to our food hygiene instructors and testers. We are also able to clarify our future direction. Our goal has been to enhance the level of our instructors in order to meet customer expectations, or, in other words, to become able to provide even more precise service to our customers. Therefore, our achievement of this certification on this occasion is proved to be very useful.
As long as people are involved in business, we cannot entirely avoid such a thing as ¡Èhuman error.¡É However, this certification helped us not only to recognize human errors as a hazard but also to conceptually identify the importance of trying to minimize the risks. Although we had been practicing this fully in actual business, our conceptual understanding was still at the development stage, so it was extremely beneficial that it was pointed out to us.
The ISO 22000 standard also taught us the importance of systematic management of the equipment and other items we use in business. Until now, we have left such management to individuals. From here on, however, we will practice systematic management.
This may have been partly because we were timing-wise blessed, but we are happy to note that, in competitive bidding for business with a certain major chain store in early 2009, our ISO 22000 accreditation status was regarded as our added value in terms of sales and led us to win the business. The top manager of the chain store later told us that our ISO 22000 certification was a major factor that differentiated us from other bidders.


q What sort of problems, if any, did you encounter during the audit process? Can you describe the support you received from TÜV SÜD Japan auditor?
   
a The auditor who was in charge of our company was very knowledgeable about the actual on-site business. He pointed out the importance of risk management from the business operation perspective, which was a great learning experience for us. System reviews are liable to fall into superficial formalism; but in our case, the auditor pointed out one item after another for us very carefully from practical business aspects, so we feel that we were given a very substantive review.
