The technology is an extension of the existing Smart Card standards (contactless / RFID) that combines the interface of a smartcard and a reader in a single device and is primarily aimed at usage in mobile phones.
NFC testing is based on applicable standards (ISO/IEC 14443, ISO/IEC 10373-6), Type A (normal) Type B (banking/short range).
There are 3 main use cases for NFC:
Card emulation mode - The NFC device behaves like a contactless smart card. Reader mode - The NFC device is active and reads a passive RFID tag, used for example for interactive and advertising purposes. P2P mode - 2 NFC devices are communicating together and exchange information.
There are many applications possible, such as:
Mobile ticketing - an extension of the existing contactless infrastructure, in public transport. For example, Transport For Location is looking at new smartcards, bank cards and even mobile phones to possibly replace the Oyster card system.
Mobile payment - the device acts as a debit/credit payment card for transactions of £10 or less. Customers will simply hold their contactless card up to a secure reader to make their payment.
Smart poster - the NFC device is used to read RFID tags on outdoor billboards, for example in order to get information on the move.
Bluetooth pairing - in the future, pairing of Bluetooth 2.1 devices with NFC support will be as easy as bringing them close together and accepting the pairing. The process of activating Bluetooth on both sides, searching, waiting, pairing and authorization will be replaced by a simple "touch" of the mobile phones.
